Of the known California Business Disinvestment Events, below is a listing according to which county is experiencing such events during what is nearly the first ten months of 2010 and all of 2009. Thus far in 2010 the top three counties are:
- Orange (37 events)
- Los Angeles (29 events)
- Santa Clara (27 events)
However, the figures are misleading because media accounts vary widely. For example, the Orange County Register does an excellent job of covering businesses moving into and out of the area. But the Los Angeles Times, for whatever reason, greatly under-reports business departures or investments deflected to out of state locations. Hence, the data is skewed depending upon the quality of news coverage in a community.
Certainly, things are worse in Los Angeles County. Since it has more businesses than Orange County, since the City of Los Angeles treats businesses much more harshly than does any Orange County municipality, and since the cost of doing business in significantly higher in L.A. than in just about any other California locale, I'm convinced that company departures and disinvestments greatly outstrip what Orange County is experiencing.
