For the period Jan. 1, 2009 through Oct. 12, 2010, the top five states gaining from California Disinvestment Events are Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada and Virginia (tied for fourth place) and Utah. Also finding their way onto the list are a few surprises – such as Uruguay, Chile and Brazil.

A grand total would be misleading because of these complexities:
- Inflation: A company may close one facility and move the work to three different places, thus exaggerating the totals.
- Deflation: Some events can’t be assigned a location; for example, 30 are being dispersed to general areas (e.g., “Mississippi Valley” or “Asia”) or are moving to domestic or international sites that were undisclosed.
- These are known events discovered in public records. The real number of out-of-state site selections is incalculable because so many of them are completed without fanfare.
